Punk rock band Dwarves perform live at the Casbah venue in San Diego.
Dwarves play Casbah on Sunday, November 29, at 8 PM. They're a punk rock band formed in Chicago and now based in San Francisco, led by Blag Dahlia and Ralph Champagne.
They built their reputation on a simple, loud, yet nuanced punk repertoire and lyrics that lean toward the controversial. Over the years, their sound has shifted from early hardcore and scum punk toward a more pop-punk direction. Their live shows are notorious for on-stage fights involving the audience and even a police officer, and for the fact that 'He Who Cannot Be Named' performs in nothing but a jockstrap or entirely nude.
Their album art is just as unusual. The 1990 record Blood Guts & Pussy featured naked women and a naked dwarf, and Come Clean, a decade later, followed suit covered in soap suds. They were sacked from Sub Pop over pranks like the hoax that 'He Who Cannot Be Named' had died, and they later joined Sympathy For The Record Industry.

The original members began playing together in the mid-80s as teenagers in the Chicago garage outfit Suburban Nightmare, and their 1986 Voxx Records debut Horror Stories drew on the Paisley underground scene. The show is at Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101, starting at 8 PM.
