A new comedy by Sarah Ruhl about memory, morality and connection in a technologically obsessed world.
Trinity Theatre Company brings Dead Man's Cell Phone to San Diego starting October 16, a new comedy by Sarah Ruhl. It's a two-weekend run: October 16 through 18 and October 23 through 25. The curtain goes up at 7 PM on Thursdays and Fridays, and there are both 2 PM and 7 PM shows on Saturdays and Sundays, so you've got a few different slots to choose from depending on when you can make it.
If you aren't familiar with Ruhl, she's a MacArthur 'Genius' Grant recipient and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and this one is a comedy. It opens on a cell phone that won't stop ringing in a quiet café, a stranger at the next table who's finally had enough, and a dead man with a lot of loose ends. From there it opens up into a larger question about how we memorialize the dead and how that remembering changes us. It follows a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.
The cast is a large ensemble: Jordyn Case, Sasha Foo, Bethany Lee, Carolina Marques, Ekaette Mbong, Vincent Richmond, Ri Ryan, Sofia Scafidi, and Ty Smith. Sean Boyd directs, and Sean Libiran is the choreographer.
