Pointeworks presents a ballet evening celebrating resident composer Katie Jenkins with three original commissions and live music.
Pointeworks is taking over the Balboa Theatre on Sunday, October 18, for Compositions: An Evening of Katie Jenkins, a ballet program dedicated entirely to the company's resident composer. The night is built around three original commissions, all with live music, and curated by artistic director Sophie Williams.
The bill opens with Moving Forces, choreographed by Jacquelyn Long for six dancers and scored for piano and violin. Next is Chasing Shadows, a piano solo by Laine Habony. The evening closes with the world premiere of Where No Storm Comes, choreographed by Hélène Simoneau with a score for live string quartet. All three grew out of the collaboration between Jenkins and the choreographers, and the bill draws an international cast of dancers, with Williams herself among them.
Jenkins is originally from Wales and a Juilliard graduate, and her work appears across dance and film. The program frames her as one of the underrepresented women composers in the classical ballet world, and the whole evening is dedicated to female voices in both choreography and composition.
