A world-premiere pre-Broadway musical inspired by the 2013 film, following a heartbroken songwriter and a record producer whose collaboration transforms them both.
Begin Again is playing at The Old Globe in Balboa Park through October 11, 2026. It's a world-premiere pre-Broadway musical based on the 2013 film of the same name, which was written and directed by John Carney (Once, Sing Street), starred Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and earned an Academy Award nomination.
The story follows Gretta, a gifted but heartbroken songwriter, and Dan, a record producer on the brink of burnout. Their chance encounter in New York City sparks a collaboration that transforms them both. The score comes from the Grammy Award-winning pop-rock band Train, with music and lyrics by frontman Pat Monahan and a book by Jenna Clark Embrey and Molly Beach Murphy. It's staged at The Old Globe, the 91-year-old Tony Award-winning regional theatre in Balboa Park, with choreography by David Neumann and music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by Brian Usifer.
Emma Busse plays Gretta, and Patrick Heusinger is Dan. The rest of the cast includes Charlotte MacLeod as Violet, Kevin William Paul as Max, Adrienne Walker as Miriam, Nik Walker as Saul, and Casey Whyland as Stevie. Lorin Latarro directs.
