World-premiere musical based on the 2013 film, with a score by the band Train, presented by The Old Globe.
Begin Again is playing at The Old Globe in Balboa Park through October 11, and it's a world-premiere, pre-Broadway engagement. The show is a musical adaptation of John Carney's 2013 film, which he wrote and directed and which starred Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo and earned an Academy Award nomination. The story follows Gretta, a gifted but heartbroken songwriter, and Dan, a record producer on the brink of burnout, whose chance encounter in New York City sparks a collaboration that transforms them both.
The score comes from Grammy winner Train, with music and lyrics by frontman Pat Monahan and bandmates Jerry Becker and Matt Musty. The book is by Jenna Clark Embrey and Molly Beach Murphy. On stage, Emma Busse plays Gretta and Patrick Heusinger plays Dan, with Charlotte MacLeod as Violet, Kevin William Paul as Max, Adrienne Walker as Miriam, Nik Walker as Saul, and Casey Whyland as Stevie. They're part of a 19-person cast with an ensemble of eight, all under the direction of Lorin Latarro.
