City Ballet of San Diego presents three iconic 20th-century ballets, including a San Diego premiere of Light Rain, with a pre-performance lecture by Artistic Director Steven Wistrich.
City Ballet of San Diego brings American Icons to the Balboa Theatre on Saturday, October 24, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, October 25, at 2:00 PM. The program closes the company's dance series celebrating America's 250th anniversary, and it puts three works by American masters on one bill.
First up is George Balanchine's Concerto Barocco (1941), a neoclassical piece that takes Bach's Double Violin Concerto and turns it into a study of musicality and precision. Then comes Peter Martins' Ash (1991), set to music by Michael Torke, which mixes athletic movement with lyrical expression. The third is Light Rain (1981) by Gerald Arpino, a San Diego premiere that blends classical technique with contemporary flair over a score inspired by Mediterranean rhythms. The whole program is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
If you're not usually one for ballet, there's a good way to get your bearings before the curtain goes up. Artistic Director Steven Wistrich gives a free pre-performance lecture starting 45 minutes before each show, so you can hear the context behind the choreography before you see it. Doors open an hour before each performance, and the venue is the Balboa Theatre at 868 4th Ave. in downtown San Diego. The theater itself is a bit of local history: built in 1924 as a vaudeville and movie palace, it reopened in January 2008 after a city-funded renovation and restoration.
