A Kamayan feast celebrating Filipino American History Month with Chef Spencer Hunter of Lia's Lumpia, featuring communal dining on banana leaves.
Chef Spencer Hunter is hosting a Kamayan dinner at the San Diego History Center on Sunday, October 25, from 6 to 8 PM. It's part of the city's Filipino American History Month celebrations, and the whole thing is built around a traditional Filipino style of communal dining: food is spread across a table lined with fresh banana leaves instead of plates and cutlery, and everyone eats with their hands.
Hunter is a San Diego native and a former finalist on Food Network's Great Food Truck Race. He runs Lia's Lumpia, and he's known for his Sisig Lumpia, which has taken first place in competition. His cooking draws from his Filipino grandmother's legacy, and he blends that with his African American roots. He's cooked for a wide range of people, from corporate leaders to members of the British Royal Family.
Your ticket covers appetizers, the kamayan feast itself, and complimentary beverages. It also includes after-hours admission to the San Diego History Center exhibits, including Taste San Diego: Filipino Culinary Journeys. Seating is limited, so you'll want to grab a spot sooner rather than later.
