A fast-paced farce adapted by Steve Martin from a play by Carl Sternheim, examining conformity, desire and public spectacle.
The Underpants opens at the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater on May 12, 2027, and runs through May 23. It's a fast-paced farce adapted by Steve Martin from a play by Carl Sternheim, and it's the final production of 100A Productions' 2026-2027 season.
The story starts with a single public mishap and spirals from there. It's a century-old satire that Martin has updated into a contemporary look at conformity, desire, and public spectacle. It takes aim at social conformity, sexual repression, and the absurdity of sudden fame, and it does so with rapid-fire dialogue, physical comedy, and escalating chaos. 100A is billing it as the season's most exuberant offering.
That season was built around the theme 'Listening, Memory, and the Stories We Tell,' which paired fully staged productions with Industry Night readings, each followed by pre-show lobby happy hours. Producing Artistic Director Rick Frederick described the season as 'about listening: to memory, to belief, to one another, and to the stories that make us feel less alone.' The Underpants is the show that closes it out.
