A charming Christmas play about new tamaleras and their recipe, a tradition in San Antonio since 1993, exploring friendship, family and camaraderie.
Las Nuevas Tamaleras returns to the Jo Long Theatre at The Carver from December 3 to 6, another holiday run for the Christmas play that's been a San Antonio fixture since 1993. For more than a quarter-century, it's held its own alongside the city's other holiday staples like The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life, with plenty of families making it part of their annual ritual.
The story centers on Silvia, Josie and Patsy, whose first attempt at a tamalada goes hilariously wrong. Watching over them are the spirits of Doña Mercedes and Doña Juanita, who only add to the chaos as they join the new tamaleras in a power struggle over whose recipe makes the perfect tamal. It's a comedy built around friendship, family and camaraderie—the kind of play that makes you laugh, makes you cry and makes you proud. Burras Finas Productions brings it to the Carver this year.
