The Secret Sisters

The Secret Sisters play the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater at the Tobin Center on Thursday, December 10. They're touring their fifth full-length album, Mind, Man, Medicine, and the show is built around it.

The sisters are Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle, an Alabama-bred duo whose harmonies have been the center of their work since their self-titled debut in 2010. Over the years, those harmonies have looked at the thornier parts of life, love, and womanhood. Their 2020 album Saturn Return earned a Grammy nomination and was co-produced by Brandi Carlile.

Mind, Man, Medicine comes from a different set of hands. It was co-produced by Ben Tanner and John Paul White of The Civil Wars and recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals and Sun Drop Sound in Florence. The record also features Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell and multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell. The sisters have pointed to raising young children as a major influence on the songwriting here, which they describe as more self-reliant and open-hearted than their earlier work.

If you've followed them since the beginning, you'll recognize the harmony-driven sound they've built around. If this is your first time seeing them, the new album is a good place to start. The show is at the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater in the Tobin Center, and tickets are available through the venue's website.
