Special screening of the funk music documentary 'We Want The Funk!' with guest Fred Wesley of the New JB's; free admission with pre-registration.
The Little Carver Civic Center hosts a special screening of We Want The Funk! on Friday, October 23, presented by the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum in collaboration with the Carver Community Cultural Center and KLRN. The film is a documentary that traces the history of funk music, following it from its African, soul, and early jazz roots through its rise into the public consciousness and on to its influence on new wave and hip-hop. Along the way, it features James Brown, George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, Labelle, and Fela Kuti's Afrobeat.
The screening is part of the SAAACAM Film Club, and the guest for the evening is Fred Wesley of the New JB's. Wesley is a legendary figure in the funk world, having played with James Brown and worked across the very eras the film covers, so he's a natural fit for a night built around the genre's history. The documentary itself is described as a syncopated voyage through that history, and having someone like Wesley in the room adds a personal connection to the music on screen.
