A cult classic musical comedy based on the 1960 film, following a shy florist and his mysterious Venus flytrap, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman.
San Pedro Playhouse is running Little Shop of Horrors through October 31, with performances at the Russell Hill Rogers Theater, 800 West Ashby Place. It's a San Pedro production directed by Chris Berry, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman.
The show is a cult classic based on the Roger Corman film, with a screenplay by Charles Griffith. It follows Seymour, a shy florist who finds fame, fortune and the girl of his dreams through a mysterious Venus flytrap that has very specific needs. Director Chris Berry describes it as a morality parable about what happens when ordinary people, desperate to escape their circumstances, begin feeding an opportunity that promises them everything they've ever wanted.
The score produced some of musical theatre's most recognizable numbers, including "Suddenly, Seymour," "Skid Row (Downtown)," "Somewhere That's Green" and "Feed Me (Git It)." Critics have called it a "delightfully wicked jukebox of rock, doo-wop and Broadway show tunes" (Variety), "one of the most charming, tongue-in-cheek musicals on stage" (Broadway.com) and "equal parts laughs, heart and rock 'n' roll" (The Washington Post). It contains mild horror elements, comedic depictions of violence and themes of domestic abuse, and is recommended for ages 12 and up.
