A physical comedy play for young audiences based on the classic children's book, following the chaotic adventures of a boy and a mouse.
Magik Theatre is bringing If You Give A Mouse A Cookie to the stage from October 3 through October 25, 2026. It's a children's show based on Laura Numeroff's 1985 picture book, adapted for the stage by Jodi Davidson. If you've read the book, you know the setup: a simple request from a tiny guest spirals into a chain reaction of one thing leading to another. The play takes that and runs with it, turning a quiet afternoon into a mayhem-filled joyride for all ages.
The story starts with a boy who just wants a peaceful day—a bag of cookies and a spot in the yard to read his comic book. Then comes the mouse: adorable, full of questions, energy, and hunger. What starts as a simple request snowballs into a zany, cause-and-effect adventure that keeps moving forward. It's an hour-long show driven by physical comedy, so it's the kind of thing that works as well for the kids as it does for the adults in the room.
That physical comedy is no accident. The production was directed by Pam Ramirez, a professional clown whose background includes Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus and study at the Dell Arte School of Physical Theatre. Having someone with a circus and physical theater pedigree at the helm explains why the show leans so heavily on movement and timing rather than just dialogue.
