New Zealand's leading contemporary dance company fuses traditional Samoan and Maori dance with contemporary styles in this youth matinee performance.
Black Grace Contemporary Dance Co. performs at the Carver Community Cultural Center on Friday, February 26, 2027. They're coming from New Zealand, where they're known as the country's leading contemporary dance company, and this is part of the Carver's Youth Matinee Series.
The company is led by Artistic Director Neil Ieremia, who blends traditional Samoan and MΔori dance with contemporary styles. He builds the choreography around three Samoan principles: Fa'amaoni (integrity and pride), Fa'amalosi/Loto Tele (perseverance and determination), and Fa'aloalo (humility and respect). The dancers share the cultural traditions behind their work, so you get the context along with the movement.
