Contemporary dance by Black Grace, a New Zealand company founded by choreographer Neil Ieremia, blending Pacific cultures with athletic movement.
Black Grace brings their contemporary dance to the Jo Long Theatre on Saturday, February 27, 2027, at 8 PM. It's a New Zealand company, and they're coming to San Antonio as part of the Carver Community Cultural Center's season.
The company was founded by choreographer Neil Ieremia, who draws on his Samoan heritage and New Zealand roots. His work fuses traditional Samoan and MΔori dance with contemporary styles, and he builds it around three Samoan principles: Fa'amaoni (integrity and pride), Fa'amalosi/Loto Tele (perseverance and determination), and Fa'aloalo (humility and respect). The result is known for explosive physicality and lyrical grace, and the company explores identity, community, resilience, and human connection. The New York Times has described their distinguishing spirit as one of incredible speed and stamina.
On stage, the dancers share the cultural traditions behind their work and show how they come together through movement, rhythm, and storytelling. If you're bringing a younger crowd, there's a youth matinee on Friday, February 26, from 11 AM to 12 PM, aimed at grades 5-12. That performance is followed by introductions, a Q&A, and a chance to meet the company.
