Performance by French artist Aurélien Dougé in which a single steel bar becomes the only apparatus to explore the body, space and light, with an artist talk and Q&A.
Aurélien Dougé brings Untitled (Steel Bar) to the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art on Saturday, November 14. It's a performance that works with almost nothing: just Dougé and a single steel bar. He uses it as his only apparatus, and the piece centers on the relationship between physical effort, architectural space, and endurance. He activates the gallery through controlled tension, bodily presence, and the interplay of light and shadow.
Dougé is a French performance artist, born in 1986 and now based in Geneva. He trained at the Lyon National Conservatory of Music and Dance and danced with the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. He also collaborates with choreographer Cindy Van Acker and director Romeo Castellucci. His practice spans performance, installation, film, and theater, and he often works with simple materials—steel, ice, salt, light, and shadow—using the body to explore matter, space, and imperceptible physical transformations. Untitled (Steel Bar) fits right into that: the steel bar is the only tool he needs to set the whole thing in motion.
His work has been shown internationally at the Musée d'arts de Nantes, La Bâtie - Festival de Genève, and Matera European Capital of Culture, and he's a recipient of the Pro Helvetia COMPASS program for 2025-2027.

There are two ways to catch it on the day. The performance is given twice: once at 1:30 PM, and again at 5:00 PM. The 5:00 PM showing is followed by an artist talk and Q&A, so if you want to hear from Dougé himself after the piece, that's the one to go for. Admission is free with RSVP, and you'll need to RSVP to get in. The museum is at 20 S. West Temple in Salt Lake City.
