Free hands-on printmaking workshop for all ages at the UMFA, inspired by the museum's exhibition 'For the Future: Collecting at the UMFA 2001-2026'.
The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is hosting another session of Third Saturday for Families on Saturday, November 21, from 1 PM to 4 PM. This one is all about printmaking, and it's part of the museum's free, hands-on art-making series that runs every third Saturday of the month. The sessions are designed for visitors of all ages and abilities, so it's as much for kids as it is for adults.
Printmaking is a centuries-old art form that takes a lot of different shapes—woodcut, intaglio, etching, engraving, screen printing, and lithography are all under that same umbrella. For this session, you'll make your own set of colorful prints inspired by For the Future: Collecting at the UMFA 2001-2026, an exhibition that draws from the museum's collection. The activity is linked to the art on display, so you'll be working with the same kind of techniques that have been used for generations.
Toward the end of the afternoon, the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art's Art Truck rolls in. Artist Laura Sharp Wilson leads an exploration of the history of paper money, which fits right in with the day's focus on printing. It's a good way to see how the same basic idea—pressing ink onto paper—shows up in things we use every day, not just in a gallery.
