Family art session in which visitors explore the theme of houses and make an accordion house out of paper.
Utah Museum of Fine Arts is hosting Third Saturday for Families: Paper Houses on Saturday, May 15, from 1 PM to 4 PM. It's part of the museum's ongoing Third Saturday series, which is a good day to bring the kids along and spend an afternoon in the galleries without worrying about the cost.
The session starts with a look at why artists keep coming back to the house as a subject. They'll talk through the idea of home and hearth—the things that make a building a place where people actually live—and how that shows up in art. It's a simple enough starting point that works for all ages, and it gives you a way to look at the museum's collection with a specific question in mind.
That's where the art-making comes in. After the discussion, everyone gets to make their own accordion house out of paper. It's a hands-on activity for the whole family, so you'll walk away with something you actually made rather than just something you looked at. The museum's collection has plenty of houses to draw from, too—one example is LeConte Stewart's The Victorian, North Salt Lake (1927, oil on masonite), a piece that fits right into the theme.
