Family workshop in which visitors create their own kaleidoscope inspired by the work of artist Amor Muñoz, on a free-admission third Saturday.
Utah Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a family workshop on Saturday, December 19, from 1 PM to 4 PM, where you and your kids can build your own kaleidoscopes. It's part of their Third Saturday for Families program, which runs every third Saturday of the month and pairs a hands-on project with a piece from the museum's collection. This session takes its cue from salt 18: Amor Muñoz, an exhibition by Mexico City-based artist Amor Muñoz.
Muñoz works at the intersection of technology, craft, labor, and biology, and the specific piece that inspired this workshop is KaleidescopElote, an interactive sculpture and augmented reality sound experience that comes alive with visitors' movement. The show brings contemporary technologies into contact with much older systems of knowledge, and the workshop lets you make your own version of that kaleidoscope to take home.
If you can't make it in person, the museum also puts out at-home family art activities linked to each month's project, so you can keep the creative thing going even after the day is over. It's a good way to get kids thinking about how art can be something you interact with rather than just look at.
