Free family art session to mould copper foil and wire into a small sculpture inspired by Onishi Yasuaki's 'Stone on Boundary'.
The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is hosting Third Saturday for Families: Copper Foil Sculptures on Saturday, March 20, from 1 PM to 4 PM. It's a family art activity where you get to mold copper foil and wire into your own small sculpture, and the whole thing is inspired by Stone on Boundary, a monumental installation by artist Onishi Yasuaki.
If you haven't seen Stone on Boundary yet, it's on display in the G. W. Anderson Family Great Hall. The work is made up of 5,000 copper foils, each one cast from a river rock gathered from two very different places: Osaka, Japan, and right here in Salt Lake City. By bringing those stones together, Yasuaki sets out to reflect the varied landscape of the state. The session takes that same idea and puts it in your hands, letting you work with the same materials—copper foil and wire—to make something of your own.

It's a good one to bring the kids to, especially since you're working with your hands rather than just looking at things on a wall. You'll be molding and shaping the foil, so it's more about the process of making than having a finished masterpiece. And since the museum is free every third Saturday of the month, this one is free to attend. It runs from 1 PM to 4 PM at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City.
