Free family clay sculpture workshop at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on its Third Saturday for Families.
Utah Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a clay sculpting workshop on Saturday, January 16, from 1 PM to 4 PM. It's part of their Third Saturday for Families program, which opens the galleries to families with a free art-making activity every third Saturday of the month. The museum is free on those days, so you can walk through the exhibits and then spend the afternoon making something of your own.
The session is built around the ceramics on view. You're invited to take in the ceramics in the galleries and then create your own sculpted masterpiece out of clay. It's a good way to spend a few hours with kids—looking at how other artists worked with the material before trying it yourself.
One of the pieces you'll see is Breathless (Bust of Bob), a 1976 glazed earthenware sculpture by Robert Arneson (1930–1992). It's been hanging in the UMFA portrait hall for a long time, and it's a great example of the kind of ceramic work the museum collects. Seeing it in person gives you a sense of what's possible with clay before you sit down to make your own piece.
