The Utah Symphony performs Howard Shore's Academy Award-winning score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring live on the big screen, with the Utah Symphony Chorus.
The Utah Symphony is bringing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring to Maurice Abravanel Hall for three nights in May 2027. They'll perform Howard Shore's score live to the film on the big screen on Thursday, May 20, Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22, with each show starting at 7 PM.
It's the full treatment: the symphony plays the score live in the hall, and the Utah Symphony Chorus joins in for the choral parts. If you've seen the movie, you know how much of the heavy lifting Shore's music doesβthe sweeping themes for the Shire, the tension as the Fellowship forms, and the darker, heavier sounds that creep in as they move toward Mordor. Hearing that played by a live orchestra and choir in the room is a different experience from the recorded track.
The film follows Frodo Baggins, who inherits the One Ring and sets out with a Fellowship of hobbits, men, a wizard, a dwarf, and an elf on a quest across Middle-earth to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom before the Dark Lord Sauron can reclaim it. The music tracks that whole journey, from the peaceful hills of the Shire to the depths of Moria.
