The Utah Symphony performs Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3, with Bernstein's Candide overture and Bolcom's Violin Concerto across two evenings.
The Utah Symphony is bringing Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3 to Abravanel Hall on Friday, January 8, and Saturday, January 9, 2027. Both nights start at 7:30 PM, so you've got two chances to catch it if one evening doesn't work for you.
That symphony is the main event, and it's a big one. It was Rachmaninoff's third and final symphony, and the description that comes with it paints a pretty clear picture: sumptuous, expressive, and melancholic. It's built on folk-inspired melodies, but it's not all sweeping lines—there are moments of spareness and restraint, and a hint of modernism from a composer who was otherwise a devoted Romanticist. If you're into that kind of music, this is the one that pulls it all together.
It's not the only thing on the program, though. The symphony shares the bill with Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide and William Bolcom's Violin Concerto, so you're getting a full evening of music rather than just a single piece. Between the two, you'll have a lean, punchy overture and a concerto that puts a soloist front and center before the symphony takes over for the Rachmaninoff.
