Adults-only make-and-take art workshop led by Julie Lewis to create a one-of-a-kind batik bandana using the traditional wax-resist technique.
Batik Bandana, A Make-and-Take Workshop is coming to the I.J. and Jeanne Wagner Jewish Community Center on Wednesday, October 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. It's a hands-on session in the Arts & Crafts Studio, and since it's a make-and-take, you'll walk out with something you actually made.
Batik is a traditional wax-resist textile art, known for bold color, layered patterns, and a bit of beautiful unpredictability. The whole idea is that you apply wax to fabric to block out certain areas, then dye the cloth; the wax resists the dye, and you repeat the process to build up your design. By the time you're done, you've turned a piece of fabric into a one-of-a-kind batik bandana. It's the kind of thing that looks a lot harder than it is once you get the rhythm of it.
Julie Lewis is leading the session. She's a long-time art teacher and a well-known fixture in the community, and she'll walk you through the basics: how to apply the wax, how to build your design through resist, and how to dye the cloth. You don't need any prior experience to join in, and all the materials are included, so you just have to show up. Space is limited, though, so it's worth getting your spot early if you're interested.
