Exhibition of 17 watercolor paintings by Bert Sult, focusing on European street scenes, particularly Venice.
Bert Sult is showing a new collection of watercolors at Gallery C in Raleigh, running from February 6 through March 21. The opening reception is Friday, February 6, from 6 to 8 PM.
There are 17 paintings in the show, and this one focuses on Venice. Among them are Arcade, Rialto Bridge, San Marco, Grand Palazzo, and Night Reflections. If you've seen Sult's work before, you'll recognize his loose, abstract-impressionistic style. He usually paints en plein air—out in the open—and starts each piece with graphite value sketches. His street scenes lean heavily on European subjects, with London, Paris, Rome, and Venice as his most frequent settings. He became enamored of Venice during a recent visit, following in the footsteps of James McNeill Whistler, and this show gathers a group of works from that city.
It's also worth knowing who he is outside the gallery. Sult is a North Carolina architect as well as a watercolorist, and he's been unusually prolific in both. As an architect, he designed several notable Raleigh-area buildings: Jones Chapel at Meredith College, the Raleigh Municipal Building and Complex, Cary Medical Center, and the Whitaker Center. So when you're looking at his paintings of European streets and plazas, you're seeing the work of someone who spends his professional life thinking about how buildings and public spaces actually fit together.
