American premiere of the theatrical adaptation of the classic noir film, set in post-WWII Vienna, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn.
Theatre Raleigh is bringing The Third Man to its stage from February 12 to 28, 2027, and it's a big one for the venue. This is the American premiere of the theatrical adaptation of Graham Greene's 1949 noir story, which first made its world premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London back in 2023. It's a musical, too, with music by George Fenton, a book by Christopher Hampton, and lyrics by Don Black.
The story is classic noir: post-World War II Vienna, where American writer Holly Martins arrives at the invitation of his friend and hero, Harry Lime. He finds out Lime has apparently died in a car accident, and that discovery pulls him into a shadowy world of deception and moral ambiguity. The production is billed as a stylish, suspenseful, and cinematic exploration of loyalty and betrayal, and it's a developmental staging here in North Carolina.
Directing is Sir Trevor Nunn, a Tony and Olivier Award winner who's staged some of the biggest musicals on Broadway and the West End, including Les Misérables, Cats, and Sunset Boulevard. He also directed the show's London run and is returning to the helm for this one. He has a personal connection to Theatre Raleigh, too: he directed the venue's executive director, Lauren Kennedy Brady, in Sunset Boulevard on Broadway in 1994 and on its national tour, and in the London production of South Pacific in 2001.
