Concert by indie pop singer-songwriter McKinney and musician Leah Lawson at Berkeley Cafe.
McKinney & Leah Lawson play Berkeley Cafe on Sunday, October 11, at 7 PM. The bill features McKinney, an Asheville-based bass player and singer-songwriter, performing with Leah Lawson.
McKinney's sound is indie pop, and the way she puts it together tells a bit of her story. She spent her formative years in southern West Virginia inside a music school, and her music pulls from a few different places: the influence of her blues-singer mother, a BFA in Jazz, and a love of classic rock. She's known for consistently sad lyrics, so expect the set to lean into that side of things.
When she's not on stage, she stays busy in the music scene in a few different ways. She teaches music lessons at LEAF Global Arts, works shows at The Orange Peel, and plays rugby on the side. It's a fair bit of ground to cover between the classroom, the venue, and the pitch, and the jazz degree sits right in the middle of it.
