A live performance by the jam band Jupiter Coyote, featuring their signature 'Mountain Rock' sound, with Opaline as the opening act at the Lincoln Theatre.
Jupiter Coyote play the Lincoln Theatre on Saturday, February 20, with Opaline opening. The show starts at 8:30 PM, and doors open a half hour before.
If you haven't run into them before, Jupiter Coyote are jam band pioneers who call their sound "Mountain Rock" — a mix of Southern Appalachian boogie and bluegrass-infused funk-rock. They've been at it for 34 years, playing more than five thousand shows and selling over a million CDs independently. The band started in Brevard, North Carolina, where childhood friends Matthew Mayes (guitar, guijo, vocals) and John Felty (vocals, guitars) decided to pursue music in 1988. They eventually moved to Macon, Georgia, and added drummer Gene Bass and bassist Sanders Brightwell. Steve Trismen joined on vocals and fiddle in 1999, and Noel Felty took over drums in 2001. Longtime sidekick John Meyer came in on lead guitar and coined the name "Jupiter Coyote" when the band got going in Macon.
Their lineup is built around a guijo — a banjo-neck instrument with a Stratocaster body — a fiddle player and two slide guitar players. That particular combination is what gives them that Appalachian boogie sound they're known for. With Opaline opening, the night will be a full bill of live music.
