Jazz singer and songwriter Janna Badalian performs original songs and covers at Smoky Hollow.
Janna Badalian plays Smoky Hollow on Tuesday, October 13, at 5 PM. She's a Raleigh-based jazz singer and songwriter who writes and performs original songs in both English and her native Russian.
Her background is a bit of a map. She was born and raised in a university town in Siberia to a family of Soviet scientists and started in music early, playing in local acoustic projects and jazz ensembles in Moscow while working day jobs. She moved to North Carolina in 2007 and eventually found her way into jazz songwriting and performing at local venues around town.
That training runs across a few different worlds: classical guitar at the Novosibirsk music college, jazz vocals at the Moscow Institute of Improvisational Music, and classical singing at the Katherine Posner vocal studio here in Raleigh. Her repertoire follows suit, moving from her own songs in Russian and English to jazz and blues covers, Brazilian bossa-nova, and French and Neapolitan songs. Every so often, she'll throw in an opera aria that she accompanies herself on guitar.

It's a wide reach for one set—original songs in two languages, a handful of styles from different corners of the map, and the occasional operatic turn. The show is at Smoky Hollow, 421 N Harrington St, and it's free.
