A hands-on, participatory music experience for all ages where community members explore instruments and make music together with no prior experience required.
The Raleigh Music Collective is bringing an Instrument Petting Zoo to Gipson Play Plaza on Sunday, October 18, from 2 PM to 4 PM. It's a hands-on, participatory music experience designed for all ages, and the name tells you exactly what it is: a chance to get your hands on instruments and make some noise without needing to know a thing about music first.
Two youth quartets open the session, and once they've set the tone, the public takes over. You'll find a spread of easy-to-use instruments—boomwhackers, bucket band percussion, hand percussion, and kazoos—and you're invited to jump in and play along. There's no musical experience required, so it's as much for kids as it is for adults who just want to mess around with something they've never touched before. Running alongside the music is a sensory art activity where you can paint old instruments, so if you're more into the visual side than the sonic one, there's a spot for you too.

The whole thing is presented by the Raleigh Music Collective, and it's held at Gipson Play Plaza in Dix Park, which spans 18.5 acres of playgrounds, gathering spaces, gardens, art, and skyline views. It's a good spot to hang out before or after, especially if you're bringing the family. If you can't make this one, they're doing it again on November 8, also from 2 PM to 4 PM. Admission is free.
