A self-paced online course for educators exploring an arts-based approach to social-emotional learning through themes of mindfulness, identity, and community building.
The North Carolina Museum of Art is running a self-paced online course on art and social-emotional learning from Tuesday, Oct 6, through Tuesday, Dec 8. It's a 15-hour program developed with the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, and because it's self-paced, you can work through it on your own schedule over those two months rather than showing up to a set class time.
The course takes an arts-based approach to social-emotional learning, organized around five themes: Mindfulness, Identity, Perspective Sharing, Community Building, and Agency. It draws on experiences that model the growth of justice-oriented, global citizens, so it's less about the technical side of art and more about how art can be used to explore these kinds of personal and social questions. When you finish, you get a certificate of participation for 15 hours, which translates to 1.5 CEU with approval from your local school system.
It's one of several educator offerings the museum puts on, alongside free public tours of a collection that spans more than 5,000 years of art and culture. The museum itself welcomes over 1.1 million visitors to its Raleigh campus each year and supports arts programming across all 100 North Carolina counties. Admission to the People's Collection and the 164-acre Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park—which has 4.7 miles of trails, public art, gardens, and a terraced pond—is free, though special exhibitions are ticketed.
