Recital of works by Meredith College and Community School of Music composition students; free and general admission.
The Composition Area Recital is happening at Carswell Concert Hall on Sunday, October 11, from 3 to 4 PM. It's a showcase of new music written by composition students from Meredith College and the Community School of Music, so the whole program is built around work coming straight from the classroom and the studio rather than a set of established classics. If you've ever wondered what the composition side of a music program actually sounds like, this is exactly that: a collection of pieces by students who are currently writing and arranging their own music.
Carswell Concert Hall is inside the Wainwright Music Building on the Meredith College campus, which is over in West Raleigh at 3800 Hillsborough Street. The college itself has been around since 1891, when it opened with just over 200 women; today it's one of the largest independent private women's colleges in the country, with nearly 2,000 students and a spot on the 'Best Colleges' lists from U.S. News, The Princeton Review, and Forbes.com. The recital brings together students from both the college and the Community School of Music, so you'll hear work from two different programs in one afternoon.
