A candlelit concert where the Range String Quartet reimagines iconic neo-soul tracks by artists such as Prince and Childish Gambino.
The Rialto hosts a Candlelight concert on Saturday, November 14, featuring neo-soul songs by Prince, Childish Gambino, and more. The Range String Quartet will be the ones playing, and they'll be performing the set in a room lit by thousands of candles rather than stage lights.
Neo-soul is a term that came together in the 1990s, weaving classic soul, R&B, funk, hip hop, pop, and rock into a socially conscious and evocative sound. This concert takes some of the genre's most iconic artists and reimagines them for a string quartet, so you'll hear those familiar melodies played on strings instead of the original arrangements. The whole thing is part of a worldwide series that pairs live music with distinctive locations, and the organizers note that it's a tribute experience, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the artists or their estates.
The venue is The Rialto Theatre, located at 1620 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh's Five Points neighborhood. It's a historic movie house that opened in 1942 on the site of a former A&P grocery store, known for its Art Deco design and intimate atmosphere. The show runs about 60 minutes, starting at 5:30 PM.
