Guided session to train your eyes and ears for bird watching at Dix Park.
The Wake Audubon Society is hosting a guided bird watching session at Dix Park on Saturday, October 31, from 8:00 to 9:30 AM. It's a morning out in the park, and the focus is straightforward: training your eyes and ears to spot and identify birds. If you've ever looked up and heard something you couldn't place, or seen a flash of color in the trees and wondered what it was, this is exactly the kind of thing that helps you start putting names to those moments.
The session is run by Wake Audubon, a local chapter of Audubon NC and the National Audubon Society. They've got around 1,900 members across Wake, Johnston, Franklin, and Nash counties, and their mission is to foster knowledge and appreciation of nature, encourage responsible environmental stewardship, and conserve natural ecosystems, with a particular focus on birds, wildlife, and their habitats. It's a group that takes the conservation side of things seriously, tooโthey volunteer on river cleanups, invasive species removal, nestbox maintenance, and community science projects like the Christmas Bird Count and the Great Backyard Bird Count.
Beyond the field outings, they run free, public, in-person educational programs on the second Tuesday of each month at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences Nature Research Center in Raleigh, many of which can be viewed virtually via Zoom. So if you find you've got a taste for this, there's a regular schedule to follow afterward.
