Exhibition celebrating the most influential North Carolina artists of the 20th century, curated by Charlene Newsom and dedicated to Clyde Jones.
Gallery C is hosting Best of North Carolina 2026 from March 28 through May 12, with an opening reception on Sunday, March 29, from 1 PM to 3 PM. The exhibition brings together work by George Bireline, Francis Speight, Sarah Blakeslee, and Hobson Pittman, and this year's edition is dedicated to Clyde Jones.
Charlene Newsom, the gallery's owner, an art historian and North Carolina native, curates the show. She draws on her knowledge of the state's art to present what she describes as "The Best of North Carolina," an exhibition celebrating the most influential NC artists of the 20th century. Billed as "A Love Letter to NC Art," it puts big names and bold brushstrokes together as a tribute to the state's creative history.
This is an annual tradition: the show opens every March and runs Tuesday through Saturday. This year's edition is dedicated to Clyde Jones, whom the gallery lost on December 24 and remembers as one of North Carolina's very best. The dedication adds a personal note to a show that otherwise looks back across the century.
