A beginner-friendly sailing session for those new to the sport, with no prior experience required.
ASC Portsmouth is running a Sailing Taster Session on Tuesday 11 August, and as the name suggests, you don't need any experience to join in. It's designed as a first step: you'll be out on the water under the guidance of the centre's instructors, learning the basics of steering the boat and getting afloat safely. Once you've had a go, you can decide whether you want to sign up for a full RYA course.
The session takes place at the Andrew Simpson Centre, which sits on the shores of Langstone Harbour. It's part of the Andrew Simpson Foundation, set up in 2014 and inspired by Olympic gold and silver medallist Andrew 'Bart' Simpson MBE. The foundation's mission is to transform lives through sailing, driven by the belief that all young people can excel and succeed in life and work, with the challenges of sailing and watersports promoting health and wellbeing while building essential life skills.
The centre does a lot more than just taster sessions. It runs RYA courses, holiday clubs, instructor training and private tuition, with a programme that stretches from sailing, windsurfing and winging to foiling, powerboating and paddle sports. There are land-based activities too, like climbing, archery and team building games. The taster session is the easiest way to dip a toe in without committing to a full course first.

If you've never been on a boat before, this is a good place to start. You'll get a feel for how it works and a bit of time on the water with an instructor to show you the ropes. The session is on Tuesday 11 August at the Andrew Simpson Centre in Portsmouth.
