Punch Needle Mug Rug Craft Workshop

Tiger Lily Tufts is running a punch needle workshop at Hotwalls Studios in Old Portsmouth on Saturday 19 September. It's a beginner-friendly session, so you don't need to have picked up a needle before to get stuck in.

Over three hours, you'll learn how to work with a punch needle and pick your colours from a wide range of yarns. The goal is to make your own mug rug—a small, textured coaster for your tea or coffee—and you can design your own from scratch. If you're not feeling particularly inspired or just don't want to start with a blank page, there are templates on hand to help you along. Once the stitching is done, you'll finish the piece with a felt backing using a glue gun, and everyone takes their completed creation home on the day.

Tiger Lily Tufts is one of the resident designer-makers at Hotwalls, so this is a chance to work with someone who's based right there in the studio. The sessions are kept small, with a maximum of six people per group, which means you'll get plenty of one-on-one help as you go. If you're more of a painter than a crafter, Hotwalls also runs paint-along events led by professional instructors in local pubs and bars, where you can have a drink while you paint.

The workshop costs £32 per person.
