A beginner-friendly craft workshop where participants learn to use a punch needle to create their own decorative mug rug.
Tiger Lily Tufts are running a punch needle mug rug workshop at Hotwalls Studios in Old Portsmouth, with the next session on Tuesday 11 August from 5pm to 8pm. It's a three-hour class, and you'll leave with your own finished mug rug to take home the same day.
If you've never heard of punch needle, it's a form of tufting where you use a special needle to push yarn through fabric, creating a raised, looped pile. The workshop is built for beginners, so you don't need any prior experience to get stuck in. You'll learn how to work the needle, pick from a wide range of colourful yarns, and design your own mug rug. If you're staring at a blank canvas and not sure where to start, there are templates on hand to help you find your feet. Once the tufting is done, you'll finish the piece with a felt backing and a glue gun.
Tiger Lily Tufts suggest keeping the shape simple, sticking to four or five colours, and choosing beginner-friendly patterns like flowers, hearts or smiley faces. The session is open to ages 14 and over, and places are limited to six per class, which is why everyone can finish their piece in one go rather than taking it home as a work in progress.

The setting is part of the draw. Hotwalls Studios takes over a row of old, rarely used arches at Point Battery in Old Portsmouth, a site that once defended the city against invasion and has now been turned into a creative quarter of thirteen studios and a deli-style café, The Canteen. The workshop runs from Studio 2, so you're right in the thick of it. The session on Tuesday 11 August is 5pm to 8pm, and it costs £32 per person.
