Portsmouth100 Wonders: Heritage Art Club

Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery is running the Heritage Art Club as part of the Portsmouth100 festivities, a series of creative sessions that take place one Saturday a month from June through November. The next one is this Saturday, 22 August, from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm, and it's free to join. It all leads up to the museum's Your museum. Your stories. Your city. exhibition, which opens in October.

Each session follows the same pattern: the first half is spent uncovering the facts, stories and anecdotes behind one of the city's iconic or hidden landmarks. Once you've got the background, the second half is for making something of your own. You'll work with a local artist using collage, sketching, drawing, storytelling or photography, and every venue pairs the site with its own art form. It's open to anyone aged 16 and over, you don't need any experience, and all the materials are supplied, so you can just turn up and get stuck in.

The club moves around the city rather than staying in one place. The sessions are spread across the Japanese garden and Rose Garden, Baffins Pond, Hilsea Lido, Milton Locks, Central Library and Wymering Manor, so you'll be working on site at the very landmarks the sessions are about. The full run is 20 June, 18 July, 22 August, 12 September, 10 October and 14 November, each from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. The whole programme is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and it's free to take part.
