Placed in a Fortress City

Placed in a Fortress City is running a workshop at The Round Tower in Old Portsmouth on Sunday 26 July, starting at 11am and lasting about three hours. It's part of a series of creative sessions that look at personal and collective memory, and how those things fit into Portsmouth and its varied geography.

This particular session is a scavenger walk and cyanotype printing tour through Old Portsmouth. You'll be out on the area's historic streets and along the waterfront, taking in the old walls and the water that define the neighbourhood. Along the way, you'll be making cyanotypes — those deep blue prints made with light-sensitive chemicals and sunlight — so you'll be capturing the city as you walk it.

The whole project is built around memory and the making of belonging, and this walk puts that into practice. Instead of just talking about it, you're out in the streets, picking up fragments of the place and turning them into something you can keep. It's a slow way of looking at a part of the city most of us just pass through on the way to the seafront.

It all kicks off at The Round Tower on Broad Street, PO1 2JE, at 11am on Sunday 26 July. You'll be out for about three hours, so it's a late morning and early afternoon thing. If you're around Old Portsmouth that weekend, it's a good excuse to spend a few hours on foot, seeing the streets and the waterfront from a different angle.
