If you've never come across it, Meccano is that classic construction system of metal strips, plates, nuts and bolts that you screw together to build whatever you can imagine. The day is all about that: getting stuck in and making things. The Solent Meccano Club will be there to talk you through the hobby, answer questions, and give you some pointers on how to get your own projects off the ground. They've also made it clear that they've got all the Meccano pieces you could possibly need to build just about anything, so you don't need to bring your own kit along.
One of the best things about it is who it's for. They've described the day as being open to everyone from seasoned Meccano builders to first-timers, and it's an all-ages activity. Whether you've got a box of it in the attic from years ago or you've never even seen a Meccano set, you'll fit in. It's as much for the people who already know their way around a spanner as it is for anyone who just wants to see what the fuss is about.
It runs from 11:00 to 15:00 at Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery, and entry is free.
