Introduction to Frame Loom Weaving

Alice Hume is running an introduction to frame loom weaving workshop at Aspex Gallery in the Vulcan Building at Gunwharf Quays, with the first session on Sunday 26 July. It's a full-day thing, running 10:45 to 16:00, and if you can't make that one, there are two more on Sunday 30 August and Sunday 27 September.

Over the course of the day, you'll learn to weave on a wooden frame lap loom, make your own fabric, warp your own loom and finish a woven wall-hanging or decorative piece. The focus is on texture, pattern and colour, and you'll pick up soumak, how to experiment with two or three colours in one row, and ways to create shapes and tassels. You'll walk away with something you've actually made from scratch, rather than just a few samples.

Alice Hume is a textile artist based at Portsmouth Museum & Art Gallery, where she creates contemporary textile decor and runs workshops. She graduated from Winchester School of Art with a degree in Woven Textile Design in 2013 and studied woven design at the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås, Sweden, and in Japan. Her own work pushes the boundaries of weaving, using unusual materials like copper yarn and raffia on an eight-shaft Harris loom. She runs a workshop business, Vanderhume, and her handmade frame looms—the 'Hume Looms'—are made from recycled wood with her father; her surname comes from an ancestry of Flemish weavers.

It's a proper introduction, so you don't need to have woven before. The session runs 10:45 to 16:00, and it costs £85.
