A family trail for children aged 7+ to discover Home Front stories during the Second World War, with prizes including a Gustav the Pigeon soft toy and a D-Day Story goody bag.
The D-Day Story in Southsea is running the Everyday Heroes family trail through the summer, and it's on until 7 September 2026. It's aimed at children aged 7 and up, but it works for the whole family, so it's a good one if you've got the kids in tow and want something to do in the city.
The trail is built around the people who lived and worked on the Home Front during the Second World War. It draws on Portsmouth's centenary as a city and looks at the unsung figures who played their part in wartime life and local history, rather than just the big names. You pick up a trail sheet from the front desk when you arrive, and there's no need to book ahead.
It runs alongside a few other things in the museum. There's the Overlord Embroidery, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, and LCT 7074, the last surviving Landing Craft Tank from D-Day. The museum itself tells the story of D-Day through the personal accounts of people who were there, brought to life with audio-visual presentations and iconic objects from the collection.

Once you've finished the trail, you can enter a prize draw, with a Gustav the Pigeon soft toy and a D-Day Story goody bag up for grabs. It's free with a museum admission ticket or an annual pass, so if you're already heading in, it's an easy addition to the visit. The trail runs until 7 September 2026, so you've got plenty of time to fit it in.
