Artist Alice Hume weaves at the Aspex gallery on selected Sundays, offering visitors the opportunity to learn about her practice through live demonstrations and conversation.
Alice Hume is weaving at Aspex on Sunday 9 August, and she'll be back on Sunday 16 August and Sunday 6 September. It's not a one-off, so if you can't make the first date, you've got two more to choose from over the next few weeks.
The sessions are part of the 2126: What if? exhibition at Aspex Portsmouth, and they're set up in a way that lets you see the work as it happens. Hume works at a Harris loom right there in the gallery, so you can watch her weaving live rather than just seeing the finished pieces on the wall. It's a slow, rhythmic process to watch, and the loom itself is a fair bit of machinery to have sitting in the middle of the room.
Beyond the weaving, there's a social side to it. Hume is there to talk about her practice, so you can ask her about how she works, the materials she uses, and what goes into the pieces. If you've ever wondered how a loom actually functions or how a piece of weaving comes together, this is a good time to get a proper answer from the person doing it.
