Concert by experimental musician Tyondai Braxton, former frontman of the band Battles, at the Holocene venue.
Tyondai Braxton plays Holocene on Sunday, October 18. If you know him from the experimental rock band Battles, you're not alone—he was their frontman, and their debut album Mirrored was a critical and commercial hit. But that's just one part of a career that's been moving in a lot of different directions since the mid-1990s, when he started writing and performing as a solo artist and under various group titles.
In recent years, his work has leaned toward larger ensembles. He's composed for the Bang on a Can All Stars, Alarm Will Sound, Brooklyn Rider, and Third Coast Percussion. He collaborated with Philip Glass in 2012, and his orchestral piece Central Market has been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Sinfonietta, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He also wrote on several tracks of Dirty Projectors' 2017 self-titled album. The Washington Post has called him one of the most acclaimed experimental musicians of the last decade.
Two of his more recent projects come from the museum and the concert hall. His 2015 album HIVE 1 grew out of a 2013 performance at New York's Guggenheim Museum, and he composed TELEKINESIS, an 87-piece orchestral work that premiered live at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2018. This show is a solo date, so it's a different scale than the orchestral work he's been doing.
