Horror film screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at Clinton Street Theater as part of their Horror October festival.
Clinton Street Theater is screening The Texas Chain Saw Massacre on Sunday, October 18, at 7 PM. It's the 1974 original, the one that basically defined the slasher movie and left a mark on every horror film that followed. If you've only seen the remakes, this is the one that started it all.
The screening is part of Horror October, the theater's annual festival of cult classics, international horror, midnight movies, and Halloween-themed oddities. Throughout the month, the lineup fills out with special screenings, live performances, and guest appearances, so this is one night in a longer run of spooky cinema.
Clinton Street Theater is a Portland fixture for independent, classic, cult, and art-house programming. It also hosts GuignolFest, the city's original 72-hour horror film contest, which Dylan Hillerman and Julia Reodica founded in 2009. Over 17 years, the contest has produced more than 200 Portland-made horror shorts. The wider horror community owes a lot to independent cinemas like this: classics like Halloween, Eraserhead, The Evil Dead, Saw, Hereditary, and The Blair Witch Project found their audiences largely because indie theaters were willing to take risks on unconventional, low-budget, and unsettling work.
