An open-mic storytelling competition where participants share true, personal stories on the theme Frenemies.
The Moth StorySLAM comes to Holocene on Tuesday, October 20, with the theme Frenemies. If you've never been to a StorySLAM, it's an open-mic storytelling competition where anyone can sign up to tell a true, personal story on the night's theme. The stories are told live and off-the-cuff, without notes, and they're limited to five minutes each. The audience then votes for their favorite, and the winner gets a trophy.
That's the part that makes it a bit different from a typical open mic. You're not just listening to a few people share their lives; you're part of the judging. And because it's an open mic, the lineup is built on the fly. You might hear a seasoned storyteller who's done this a dozen times, and you might hear someone stepping up to a microphone for the first time in their life. The theme Frenemiesโthose complicated relationships that sit somewhere between friend and enemyโis the kind of prompt that usually pulls out some pretty specific, messy stories, and since they have to be true, there's a realness to it that you don't get from a scripted show.
If you're not the type to get on stage, you can just come and watch. The room is first-come, first-served, so if you want a good spot, you'll want to get there early. There are up to ten tickets available at the door, and the venue is strictly 21 and over.

Doors open at 7 PM and the show starts at 8 PM, so you've got a window to grab a drink and settle in before the first story kicks off. If you've got a five-minute story about a frenemy of your own, you can sign up and take the stage yourself; otherwise, just show up and listen. It's Tuesday night at Holocene, doors at 7 PM, show at 8 PM, 21+.
