Screening of the queer, surreal slasher film directed by Jane Schoenbrun as part of the Queer Cinema Witching Hour Halloween event.
Tomorrow Theater is screening Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma on Saturday, October 31, as part of the theater's Queer Cinema Witching Hour, a Halloween event staged with MUBI. The film is written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, who previously made I Saw the TV Glow and We're All Going to the World's Fair.
Schoenbrun imagines a reboot of a controversial 1980s slasher franchise that had faded through years of slapdash sequels. It plays as a queer coming-of-age story inspired by Friday the 13th and cult classics like Sleepaway Camp, with a killer called Little Deathβa name that draws on the French idiom la petite mort. The plot follows a young filmmaker who tracks down the original movie's star, now a reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, and the two fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear and delirium.
Schoenbrun's signature visual style is still there, though the tone is drier and funnier than her previous work. The film uses practical effects and CGI violence, with a score and soundtrack by Alex G. Most of it was shot on created sets with painted backdrops rather than on location. Hannah Einbinder stars as Kris, and Gillian Anderson plays Billy.
