Indie rock four-piece Slow Pulp perform live at Revolution Hall in Portland, with support from Snuggle.
Slow Pulp play Revolution Hall on Friday, October 23, with Snuggle opening. The Madison, Wisconsin, four-piece is touring their third album, Melodie, which came out September 18 via ANTI-.
They've been together since the mid-2010s, when singer and guitarist Emily Massey met childhood friends Henry Stoehr on guitar, Alex Leeds on bass, and Teddy Mathews on drums. They grew up together and still do, and they left Madison in 2018 to move to Chicago. Their debut, Moveys, arrived in 2020, recorded while Massey was caring for her parents—her father a veteran musician injured in a car crash. Their second album, Yard, came in 2022 as their first for ANTI-; Massey wrote it while isolated in a northern Wisconsin cabin during a COVID scare, and the band later toured with the Pixies, Death Cab for Cutie, and Alvvays.
When they talk about their music, they often lean on synesthetic imagery. Massey describes "Doubt," the second song on Yard, as lyrically dark but set in an upbeat, almost campy environment. That contrast—dark lyrics meeting a bright, pop-leaning sound—is a good way to get a sense of where they sit.
