Alternative/indie act Sammy Rae & The Friends perform with special guest Melt at the historic McMenamins Crystal Ballroom.
Sammy Rae & The Friends play the McMenamins Crystal Ballroom on Friday, October 9, with Melt opening. The New York-based alternative/indie act is known for a retro-pop sound that blends jazz, funk, rock and pop, fronted by vocalist Sammy Rae. Two of the tracks they're recognized for are "The Den" and "Jackie Onassis."
Their live shows have a reputation for high energy and improvisation, so the set should feel a bit different from the recordings. That's a good thing to keep in mind if you're going in expecting a straight reproduction of the albums.
The Crystal Ballroom is a historic Portland landmark with a few quirks that change how you experience a show. The main floor is a floating dance floor, and the venue has a multi-tiered layout: the main floor is general admission standing, and the balcony seating is first-come, first-served. If you want a seat, you'll want to get there early.
